To close out this thread - an update...
The PSU was broken but an email to contact@spykeeworld.com with an explanation of the problem meant that they sent a new PSU AND dock. The new dock and PSU worked although there appeared to be a fault in that the Spykee did not autopark properly - I put the new PSU onto the original dock which resolved hte issue although with the old dock the console app keeps showing the battery toggling between charging and battery full. I suspect that the old dock is also faulty and may be the reason the PSU packed up, but I will see if the new PSU lasts with the original dock (as the new dock is unusable without the ability to autopark) - I suspect from reading other threads that the dock/PSU may be the weak link in what is otherwise and excellent product.
Full marks to Spykee support though for dealing with the issue and shipping the parts from France so quickly.
Well, I too have charging problems. My Spykee actually charged ONE time, and I worked him in Ad Hoc mode. Then dead battery. He shows that he's recharging, but never seems to actually recharge. I removed the battery, took it to a friend's hobby store, and the battery shows 6.4 volts. So I put the battery back in, and noticed a little green led light on the cicuit board was lit (on the charger) Cool, I thought...he's charging. But i was wrong.
I even have the upgraded "5 hour" charger from the Spykee website. Put him on it for 5 hours & NOTHING. But then I noticed something really odd...
I turned the power switch to off, put him on the base, and that little light came on. So, I brought up my console, and there he was! Showing full battery, but I couldn't control him. So I assume this is a good way to test the charger function. NOW what I'm wondering is - did I fry my battery with the old charger? I'd really like this dang thing to work!
