Well I always wanted one of these but wasn't willing to pay the $300.00 they wanted, cheep bastard I am so I found a used one for much less $40.00 to be exact, I spend way to much on technology as it stands.
-great toy and surveillance utility, although I use network cameras already this is an amusing toy to play with.
-building the thing takes some patients, I think I'm going to modify the build as I keep tipping spykee over every time I run into something in the house lower center of gravity.
-I am good with networking so I usually don't have a problem getting things to work remotely I completely understand port forwarding and all that stuff, I should have read the instructions 8.3. as it clearly states. I was trying to put my I.P. in the remote connection box "xx.xxx.xxx.xx:5602" of course followed by the port number couldn't get it to connect I pulled the hair out of my head, reading forms about port 9001, don't check the box to forward the port just allow remote and program the router to forward to 9001, but how would spykee know if you don't program it in the bot, but to no avail I read the bloody instructions and you type your bot's name in the box the one you register at spykeeworld.com not the ip address.
-all works great my cat goes nuts when I chase it around the house.
one other thing make sure when you register the username is "blabla" but the password must be basic no characters, when you confirm the information on the bot it says registration ok but when you check allow remote assistance it gave me an invalid robot password, once I took out the characters from the password in my spykee (spykeeworld.com) account "not admin" on the bot (I haven't tested that) it let me save the remote setup, and yes I forwarded the port and it works fine.
-battery shows empty but he keeps going and going so something is wrong with that, once in a while it shows the meter but then it shows empty, it is somewhat annoying as you have to click cancel the auto find charger pops up every time and it stops spykee dead in his tracks until you click cancel.
-I had the lights come on and stay including the camera light I couldn't get it of so I did a 10sec reset and it's back to normal.
- it won't go to the base it goes crazy it worked at first but all the sudden it is messed up goes crazy and erratic, so I will clean the sensors maybe that will do it or another hard reset I', not sure.
-I wonder if any usb cam would work get one with better quality would be nice, but most likely the firmware is written with those drivers, ill give it a try later.
- I am disappointed in the availability of firmware, I know it is open source but I would have thought they would try and improve it although it's not to buggy already but it seems they are dropping the ball on this and so much work has gone into the project, I must say it is amazing what has been done the technology a few years back but I'm sure I could think of some improvements.
- I wouldn't mind trying some other firmware out there but how to go back to the original the file is corrupt on there web site, try to open the zip and got the corrupt message.
I have the SPYKEE since some weeks now. Here's what I think so far:
1) When I first saw it, I was amazed. The dea of having a remote (network) controlled robot in my house was compelling. When I saw the features (marketing material), I was even mazed more: Skype integration, auto-recharge, room surveillance....).
2) Unpacking and assembling the robot was fun and straight forward. The first 'oh sh*t' came when I read that it was using NiMH batteries. These are always a source of never-ending pain. Anyway, first charge and then hooking up the network.
3) Being a networker by profession, I thought it can't be that hard. Actually, the people who worte the spykee software did not really an ideal job. The WPA setup is less than ideal and I still didn't find a way to connect to my robot remotely without using the manufacturers service.
4) After some days of playing and testing, I am a little bit disappointed: the battery is lame (like in previous post mentioned, it reports being empty but it's not), the inability to auto-dock without user-interaction, the missing skype integration, and some isues with the response to my GUI commands.
5) It seems, Meccano had a great idea, had a great start with the machine and then stopped all activities. It seems, there is no further work on improvements. What a pity, there is lots to be done.
