I have not yet seen mention of a mobility mod. I am not that thrilled with the practical funtionality of the current design. It LOOKS great. No doubt. But it has pretty severe limitations and can in fact topple Spykee under the right (or wrong) circumstances. So - it should be easy enough to fix. Easier than creating a way to get 8 channels of control from it's audio anyway...
After all - it's two motors being turned on in a non-proportional way. In other words - the motors are either on or off at any given time, no PWM or variable voltage to concern ourselves with. Simply disconnecting the current motors and substituting a handy relay (of the appropriate voltage - I will have to check that) will allow you to interface a totally isolated motor control system from the signals sent from the consol.
So - Spykee can be scaled UP. Look waaay up... like to eye level. To a practical level to interact with something other than peoples feet! Getting the camera that high up (physically) would not be too practical or advisable on it's current base platform. Too unstable. But if we build a bigger base with bigger motors we can move the whole original base unit of Spykee UP from the ground to a more practical height.
That bigger base now supports an isolated (by relay) motor drive system (the 'control' is still in the original base) that can (and should) run on a bigger, and seperate, power supply. Those bigger batteries, dedicated to only the new motors, and the fact the original power supply (9.6v) is no longer having to power it's original motors anymore, should result in longer run times of the overall unit too.
Getting a working tilt or perhaps a track system for the camera is critical though, if we get the camera much higher. Unless an angle or position of it can be found that allows you to still see the ground well enough to navigate properly...
Anyway - these are my future plans/mods/hacks to Spykee - as well as using his headlight to trigger a LDR sensor to switch on a bigger, brighter, seperately powered, LED light array.
Oh - btw...
The new motors would be geared (ideally) and/or it could easily be made to sit atop an existing tracked or wheeled R/C vehicle if not a custom base. I like the tracks - I just want them bigger. ;)
